At the same time, Ranji began to trust Fenris, to trust in this boy the way he had never trusted in anyone else. He began to look forward to their habitual arguments over important topics of the world that really meant little to them, started to smile more in his friend’s presence without realizing it (because he would force a frown when he did), and felt safe when he was around Fenris—and always before, he had never been safe. His demeanor started to change, and his vow to kill was eventually forgotten. The pain in his shoulders that had been nearly unbearable previous was now nothing but a nuisance that ached uncomfortably now and then, mostly at night, which kept him awake and gave him little sleep.
